May Day in my Neighborhood

Tuesday, May 1

May Day is a holiday in France.  Not just the banks are closed.  Even most of the shops where closed.  Of course, it is also smack in the middle of a huge presidential campaign.  So it's a day that is normally full of marches and demonstrations anyway, but this year it was huge.  The morning was full of politics and marching workers....but the afternoon...which was sunny and warm and full of flowers....was lovely.  I went to the park in my neighborhood and it looked as though there must be a law that on a sunny May Day, everyone with a baby must take them to the park in their strollers....and everyone with a toddler must take them to play in the park....and all old people must go sit on benches in the park watching the babies and children....or read a book in the sun....or play bolls....or play chess or cards...  It was a delight.

And to make it even more delightful, my park is some sort of refuge for ducks.  There's a stream and a big pond, complete with places for them to lay eggs and nest.  There were numerous berms, covered with flowers, paths, flowering trees and shrubs..... and lots of mellow ducks and birds.

All the ducks and birds were very mellow.   No one was feeding them junk...no kids were chasing them....everyone was very respectful.  They just admired them and consequently, they obliged by sitting still, waddeling around, swimming and enjoying the day.
